Dubai Launches Pooled SUV School Transport Pilot to Ease Congestion and Improve Commutes

Dubai has launched an innovative school transport pilot program, replacing traditional yellow buses with shared, tech-enabled SUVs for students aged 14 and above. Launched on January 14, 2026, by the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), the initiative aims to reduce traffic congestion around schools, improve commute efficiency, and offer a modern, safe alternative to private car drop-offs.

How the Service Works: Tech-Driven and Efficient

The service uses smart technology from Yango Group to optimize routes and provide real-time tracking. Key features include:

  • Pooled Rides: SUVs collect students from multiple schools in the same neighborhood along optimized corridors.

  • Guaranteed Timeliness: Commits to home-to-school travel under 60 minutes.

  • Affordable Pricing: Introductory pilot rate of AED 1,000 per month, payable online.

  • Parental Oversight: Live vehicle tracking allows parents to monitor their child’s journey.

Participating Schools and Pilot Scope

The initial phase includes students from prominent Dubai schools:

  • Bloom Academy

  • Brighton College

  • GEMS Founders School

  • GEMS Al Barsha National School

  • Dubai American Academy

  • American School of Dubai

The service will be evaluated with feedback from families, schools, and operators to guide potential expansion.

Addressing Core Urban Challenges

The pilot tackles several critical issues:

  • Traffic Congestion: Reduces the number of private cars during peak school hours.

  • Cost & Convenience: Offers a cost-effective alternative to private rides and some traditional bus contracts.

  • Environmental Impact: Lower vehicle counts contribute to reduced emissions and pollution.

  • Safety: Adheres to the RTA’s highest school transport safety standards with certified vehicles and drivers.

A Complementary Service, Not a Replacement

The pooled SUVs are designed to complement, not replace, the existing yellow bus system. Families can choose the option that best suits their needs, providing greater flexibility.

Evaluation and Future Vision

The RTA will assess the pilot based on ridership, feedback, route efficiency, and traffic impact. Success could lead to expansion to more schools, younger age groups, and additional neighborhoods.

This initiative is a cornerstone of Dubai’s smart mobility strategy, showcasing how data-driven, innovative solutions can enhance urban living. If successful, it could become a permanent, scalable model for school transport in Dubai and a blueprint for other cities worldwide.
